Parliamentary standing committee on Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs on Tuesday proposed disposing of the sensational August 21, 2004 grenade attack cases soon.
The committee made the proposal while discussing the reasons behind unusual delay in disposing of the cases. The issue was discussed in the 17th meeting of the committee at the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Bhaban.
Presided over by committee chairman Suranjit Sengupta, the meeting was attended by Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq, M Tajul Islam Chowdhury, M Shamsul Huq Tuku, M Abdul Majid Khan, Talukdar M Yunus, Adv M Ziaul Huq Mridha and Safura Begum, among others.
It has been said at the meeting that the total number of witnesses in the charge sheet and supplementary charge sheet are 491. Already depositions of 334 witnesses in the two cases have been recorded. The meeting was told that the trial process is taking long time due to the large number of witnesses.
According to reports discussed at the meeting, the total number of posts of judge in the country are 1,655 and according the report given by Supreme Court, of them 457 posts are vacant. The committee proposed for taking steps in appointing judges to the vacant posts gradually.
Chairman of Law Commission, secretary of law and justice division and officials concerned were present at the meeting, among others.
