The Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Chattogram Hill Tracts Affairs Ministry on Thursday recommended for taking necessary steps to continue the operation of Karnaphuli Paper Mills and enhance its capacity.
The parliamentary watchdog came up with the recommendation at its 34th meeting held at the conference room of the CHT Development Board in Rangamati district with committee Chairman RAM Ubaidul Moktadir Chowdhury in the chair. The committee also recommended the ministry to reopen the country’s all other closed paper mills and set up new paper mills, a handout said. The JS body requested the ministries of shipping, power, water resources, and fisheries and livestock to take an integrated measure to dredge Kaptai Lake located in Rangamati.
The meeting also suggested reinstating quota for ethnic minorities in the government services.
State Minister for CHT Affairs Bir Bahadur U Shwe Sing, committee member Ushaton Talukder and officials concerned were, among others, present at the meeting.
