Jatiya Party’s mayor candidate Saifuddin Ahmed Millon for Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has retracted his decision to pull out of the election, hours after announcing to back Awami League’s candidate Sheikh Falze Noor Taposh.
Millon was expected to withdraw his candidacy in the office of Dhaka returning officer on Thursday.
Jatiya Party Secretary General Mashiur Rahman Ranga said, “We are withdrawing our candidate to stand by AL Barrister Tapos in the Dhaka South city polls as the ruling party has supported the JP candidate in the Rangpu-3 by-election.”
“JP will contest in the polls and our activists will campaign till the end,” he said.
Election to DNCC and DSCC will be held on January 30 with voters to cast their ballots using electronic voting machines (EVMs).
According to the EC, the two city corporations have as many as 5,403,099 voters – 3,035,611 in DNCC and 2,367,488 in DSCC – to cast their votes in the election.
The DNCC voters will elect their mayor, 54 ward councillors and 18 reserved women councilors, while DSCC voters will elect the Mayor, 75 ward councillors and 25 reserved women councillors.
