The HM Ershad-led Jatiya Party has forwarded five proposals over constituting a new Election Commission, which will oversee the next national election.
The party’s delegation met President Md Abdul Hamid on Tuesday, as part of the head of state’s dialogue with political parties. The 18-member delegation led by Ershad entered the Bangabhaban before 3pm for the talks which lasted for over an hour. The delegation left around 4:30pm,
when Presidium Member Kazi Firoz Rashid told the media that they have forwarded five proposals.
The party, however, have no recommendations over the ‘search panel’ to be formed for appointing election commissioners, he added. Former president Ershad, now a special envoy to the PM, flanked by most of the delegation members, arrived at the Bangabhaban at 2:50pm, but Leader of the Opposition and JP Senior Co-Chairman Roushan Ershad and rest of the leaders arrived just before 3pm.
The other members of delegation included Co-Chairman GM Quader, Secretary General Ruhul Amin Hawlader, Presidium Members Kazi Firoz Rashid, Anisul Islam Mahmud, MA Sattar, Mujibul Hoque Chunnu, Salma Islam, Delowar Hossain, SM Faysal Chisty, Taj Rahman, Mashiur Rahman Ranga, Khaleda Aktera and Tajul Islam. Jatiya Party Secretary General Hawlader told bdnews24.com on Monday that their five proposals are- Keeping the EC completely independent; *A legal framework in line with the Constitution to appoint the chief election commission and other commissioners; *Separate law to form a separate secretariat for the EC;
Prohibiting election commissioners to be appointed to other constitutional organisations after their terms; setting minimum and maximum age limit for them; *Ensuring the commissioners’ impartiality, commitment, integrity, adequate knowledge on electoral matters as well their physical and mental conditions.
The Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad-led commission’s terms ends in February. The new commission will administer the next national election slated for 2019. Before forming a ‘search panel’ to appoint commissioners, President Hamid has opened talks with political parties, just like his predecessor had done in 2012.
