JP-led UNA for announcing polls schedule today

Asks EC for steps to stop use of black money, firearms in election

Jatiya Party (JP) led United National Alliance (UNA) has requested the Election Commission (EC) to move ahead with the plan for announcing polls schedule on November 8 (today).  
The UNA leaders said it call at a meeting with EC chief and members on Wednesday.
“All the dialogues concluded today (Wednesday). So, there is no justified reason to differ the date for announcing election schedule. We have conveyed this to EC,” said UNA spokesperson A.B.M. Ruhul Amin Howlader after the meeting yesterday.
JP chairperson HM Ershad was present.
The UNA asked the EC to initiate necessary steps for stopping use of black money and firearms and avoid violence in the pre and post election periods.
The alliance placed an eight-point demand including use of army as striking force in election to control law and order and not to use EVMs (electronic voting machines) in voting. Other demands are limiting the use of cars and motorbikes, easing nomination papers and printing of unified posters under the guidance of EC for candidates.
The UNA delegation includes JP Presidium Members Anisul Islam Mahmud, Ziauddin Ahmed Bablu, Mujibul Haque Chunnu and Mashiur Rahman Ranga in the meeting with EC chief and commissioners.
Earlier, Dr Kamal Hossain led Jatiya Oikyfront had asked the EC not to surge ahead for announcing election schedule until dialogue ends successfully.
The government had started dialogue with opposition political parties on October 1 for an inclusive election in a free and fair manner.
The dialogue was initiated by the government following Dr Kamal Hossain led Oikyfront’s letter to Prime Minister asking for mutual understanding through discussion over holding a credible election.
In this backdrop, a series of dialogue held between the government and opposition political parties. On November 7, the government side concluded the dialogue officially after a second-phase meeting with Jatiya Oikyfront leaders.
