Jatiya Party (JP) secretary-general Ziauddin Ahmed Bablu died at a city hospital on Saturday. He was 66.
The JP leader was undergoing treatment at Bangladesh Specialized Hospital in Dhaka, where he breathed his last at 9.12 am, the party chairman’s deputy press secretary Khandaker Deloar Jalali told UNB.
Bablu is survived by his son and second wife.
The namaz-e-janaza of the JP leader will be held at Gulshan Azad mosque after Esha prayer. His body will be kept at the party’s Kakrail central office from 1 to 3pm. Bablu will be buried at Martyred Intellectuals’ Graveyard in Mirpur.
On September 7, Bablu was admitted to Labaid Specialised Hospital in the capital’s Dhanmondi area with Covid-19 symptoms.
He underwent a Covid test the same day and tested positive, said Jalali. And after a week, Bablu was shifted to Bangladesh Specialized Hospital.
Party sources said that Bablu fell ill after returning to Dhaka from Sylhet earlier last month. He went to Sylhet to campaign for the party candidate for Sylhet-3 bypoll held on September 4.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed “deep shock and sorrow” at the demise of the JP secretary-general. She prayed for the eternal salvation of the departed soul and expressed condolences to the bereaved family.
Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen also expressed deep shock at the death of Bablu and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family.
