29 JAPA candidates to contest in polls under Grand Alliance; 143 independently, JP claimed

The ruling Awami League-led Grand Alliance has sent its candidates’ list to the Election Commission keeping 26 seats vacant for HM Ershad-led Jatiya Party.
The letter signed by party Chief and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina requested the Commission to allocate its polls logo ‘Boat’ to the listed aspirants.
Sources in the Commission confirmed that the letter sent on Sunday (Dec 9) named 247 Awami League (AL) candidates.
According to the list, AL has nominated candidates in 258 seats out of the 300. It also included names of additional 16 candidates, which included 14 who are members of its six allies and will contest with ‘Boat’ symbol.
The list sent to the EC also included two more names, who will run with the polls logo ‘Bicycle’.
Altogether, the list features 274 candidates, leaving 26 seats for Ershad’s Jatiya Party, according to people familiar with the matter.
Earlier in the day, Jatiya Party submitted a list of its 172 candidates to the Election Commission (EC), who will contest with the party’s logo ‘Plough’.
UNB adds: Jatiya Party led by HM Ershad will contest in the upcoming National Election in 29 constituencies as a partner of the Grand Alliance while independently in 143.
A Jatiya Party delegation, led by its Presidium member SM Foysal Chishti, submitted the list of its candidates to the Election Commission on Sunday afternoon.
All the 172 JP candidates will contest the election with their party’s election symbol ‘Plough’ in the election.
The 29 JP candidates who will run under the Awami League-led Grand Alliance are HM Ershad in Rangpur-3, Raushon Ershad in Mymensingh-4, GM Quader in Lalmonirhat-3, Moshiur Rahman Ranga in Rangpur-1, Rana Mohammad Sohel in Nilphamari-3, Ahsan Adilur Rahman in Nilphamari-4, AKM Mostafizur Rahman in Kurigram-1, Panir Uddin Ahmed in Kurigram-2, Shamim Haider Patwary in Gaibandha-1, Shariful Islam Jinnah for Bogura-2, Nurul Islam Talukder in Bogura-3, Nurul Islam Omar in Bogura-6, Altaf Ali in Bogura-7, Golam Kibria Tipu in Barishal-3, Nasrin Jahan Ratna in Barishal-6, Rustom Ali Faraji in Patuakhali-3, Shafiullah Al Monir in Tangail-5, Fakhrul Imam in Mymensingh-8, Mujibul Haque Chunnu in Kishoreganj-3, Syed Abu Hossain Babla in Dhaka-4, Kazi Firoze Rashid in Dhaka-6, Liakat Hossain Khoka in Narayanganj-3, Selim Osman in Narayanganj-5, Pir Fazlur Rahman in Sunamganj-4, Yahya Chowdhury in Sylhet-2, Ziaul Haque Mridha in Brahmanbaria-2, Masud Uddin Chowdhury in Feni-3, M Noman in Lakshmipur-2 and Anisul Islam Mahmud in Chattogram-5.
