UNB, Dhaka :
Journalists on Saturday took a vow to carry out a strong fight both with their pens and taking to the streets against militancy and terrorism. Speaking at a human chain programme in front of the Jatiya Press Club (JPC), they also called upon all, irrespective of creed, colour and profession to put up a strong resistance against communalism and militancy.
As part of their countrywide programme, the
Jatiya Press Club, Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) and Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) jointly arranged the programme protesting militancy and communalism. Several hundred journalists joined the programme holding banners inscribed with a slogan ‘Wake Up Bangladesh to Fight against Militancy and Communalism’.
Senior journalist and Samakal editor Golam Sarwar, News Today editor Reazuddin Ahmed, JPC president Muhammad Shafiqur Rahman, general secretary Quamrul Islam Chowhdury, BFUJ president Monjurul Ahsan Bulbul, its secretary general Omar Farroque, its ex-secretary general Abdul Jalil Bhuiyan, DUJ president Shaban Mahmud, its general secretary Sohel Haider Chowdhury, ex-general secretaries Quddus Afrad and Mollah Jalal, among others, spoke at the human chain programme.
Golam Sarwar said, “Journalists are not only soldiers with pens, but also the soldiers in the field imbued with the ideals of Bangabandhu and the spirit of the Liberation War. No evil force can suppress journalists to fight against militancy and communalism.” Reazuddin Ahmed said there is no politics and division among journalists when it comes to fighting against militancy and terrorism. “Down with terrorism and militancy. No one will be allowed to carry out killings misinterpreting Islam. We will have to resist these evil forces.”
Shafiqur Rahman said Islam in no way supports militancy. “There’s no room for militancy and terrorism in Islam. Those carrying out militant acts are the evil forces and enemies of Islam.”
Monjurul Ahsan Bulbul said those who are carrying out terror and militant activities in the name of Islam are actually stigmatising Islam. Mentioning that journalists usually practise objectivity and neutrality in performing their duties, he said, “But, when the fight is against the state, secularism and the Liberation War, we’ll surely side with our country and secularism.”
Quamrul Islam Chowhdury said, journalists will continue their fight against militants and terrorists together and free the country from this dangerous menace.
The hour-long programme that began 11am was also observed in other press clubs across the country.
