Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain on Wednesday said that journalists are constantly playing the role of watchdog. He also said, journalism is a great job.
He was speaking as the chief guest in a workshop titled “Legal Aid and Law Journalism” arranged for the journalists.
Supreme Court Legal Aid Committee and Manusher Jonno Foundation (MJF) jointly organized the workshop in the Supreme Court premises.
Syed Mahmud Hossain said, “The role of journalism and media in removal of inconsistency of the society and in formation of a beautiful society is as clear as the day light. The journalists are playing the role of watchdog constantly on social commitment on the question of the right to know the information of the people and the media’s deep responsibility.”
He said, “Law reporters represent the scenario of court, law and order, human rights and legal aids in their reports. They are bearing the reasonability of making aware everyone by publishing reports on general people and litigants’ desire, expectation and goals.”
Justice M Enayetur Rahim, Chairman of Supreme Court Legal Aid Committee, presided over the workshop. Attorney General Mahbubey Alam, Bangladesh Bar Council Vice-Chairman Advocate Yusuf Hossain Humayun, Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Advocate Zainul Abedin and Secretary Barrister A M Mahbub Uddin Khokan, among others, were present on the occasion.
Quazi Abdul Hannan, online in-charge of The Daily observer, presented the key-note paper in the workshop.
Md Shah Alamgir, Director General of Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB) and Farida Yasmin, General Secretary of Jatiya Press Club, took part in the discussion on the key-note paper.
