Journalists in Dhaka demanded safe return of journalist Utpal Das, who went missing on October 10 after coming out of his office at Motijheel.
“Utpal is good and a reporter of purboposchimbdnews.com. We don’t know why he is disappeared. We urged the government to take urgent steps to find him out,” they said.
The journalists said this at a human chain held in
front of the Jatiya Press Club on Tuesday. Several hundred journalists from different print, electronic and online media took part in the programme.
Sajeda Sweety presided over the programme, while President of Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) Saban Mahmud, former General Secretary Kuddus Afrad, former Secretary General of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) Abdul Jalil Bhuiyan, DUJ General Secretary Sohel Haider Chowdhury, BFUJ Joint-Secretary General Pulok Ghatak and Chief Editor of purboposchimbdnews.com Peer Habibur Rahman addressed the programme, among others.
Saban Mahmud said, the journalists across the country are deeply concerned over the disappearance of Utpal. It is very regrettable incident. “We will continue holding various programmes until the return of Utpal,” he said.
Earlier, on Monday night, the journalists demonstrated at Karwan Bazar on Utpal’s 29th birthday and lit 29 candles, with their mouths wrapped in black clothes.
“I never imagined that someone could detain him,” said Rajeeb Ahmed, one of the organisers of the programme.
“We are anxious as he remains untraced for 20 days. We want to believe the law enforcers will find him,” he said.
Joint-Secretaries of Jatiya Press Club Shaheed Chowdhury and Elias Khan, and Dhaka Union of Journalists General Secretary Sohel Haider Chowdhury, Dhaka Reporters Unity President Shakhawat Hossain Badsha, General Secretary Mursalin Nomani, former General Secretary Raju Ahmed, among others, joined the demonstration.
DUJ and the BFUJ will demonstrate in front of the National Press Club for the same demand on today.
