Court Correspondent :A Dhaka court on Wednesday placed BNP Chairperson’s Adviser and journalists’ union leader Shawkat Mahmud on a three-day remand in a case filed with the city’s Ramna Police Station on charge of arson attack.Magistrate Shahriar Mahmud Adnan of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka passed the order after Sub-Inspector Shafiqul Islam and Investigation Officer (IO) of the case produced him in the court seeking a 10-day remand, showing him arrested in the case. The court also turned down a bail petition filed by his counsel Masud Ahmed Talukder, President of Dhaka Bar Association. On January 9, a gang of miscreants hurled a petrol bomb at a private car in the city’s Moghbazar area in front of the Celebration Community Centre, leaving its driver injured with burns. The driver of the car, Abul Kalam Azad, succumbed to his injuries in the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital on January 15.At this, Sub-Inspector Atiqur Rahman Biswas filed a case with Ramna Police Station in this connection. Earlier on Tuesday morning, Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested Shawkat Mahmud from in front of the Samurai Convention Centre in the city’s Panthapath area.Shawkat Mahmud was arrested in three cases of arson attack on vehicles, vandalism, and crude bomb explosion in the city’s Jatrabari area, said Muntasirul Islam, Deputy Commissioner (Media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
