‘Journo role vital to check communicable diseases’-Health officials

Effective and responsible role of journalists of both print and electronic media is very important to prevent all communicable diseases particularly ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Principally, the media personnel have scopes of raising awareness among the public in general about protecting themselves from various communicable diseases through following preventive measures.
Health officials observed this while addressing a daylong workshop titled “Awareness on Communicable Disease Control (Covid-19, Dengue)” for the district level journalists in Rajshahi city on Tuesday.
The Civil Surgeon Office hosted the workshop at its conference hall aimed at sensitizing the media personnel on how they can contribute toward preventing the communicable diseases through in-depth and investigative reports.
Lifestyle, Health Education and Promotion under the Health Education Bureau of the Directorate General of the Health Services supported the meeting.
Civil Surgeon Dr Quiume Talukder, Deputy Civil Surgeon Dr Raziul Haque, Medical Officer Dr Barnabas Hasdak and Senior Health Education Officer Muhammad Shamsuzzaman addressed the media sensitization workshop as resource persons.
The discussants observed that the present COVID-19 can be prevented through following health safety measures including wearing face masks.
Simultaneously, the dengue can be prevented through keeping catchment areas of all the dwelling houses neat and clean through removing all sorts of stagnant water as it’s only the breeding place of mosquitoes.
Dr Quiume Talukder said the health department has been working relentlessly for public awareness and sought wholehearted cooperation from the journalists in this regard.
“We are putting in our level best efforts to prevent the diseases in an integrated way,” he added.
Dr Talukder told the meeting that there are 5,885 reported cases of COVID-19 in the district including 4,403 in its city but there is no report of dengue case.
