48-hr ultimatum to arrest killer, human-chain today

Staff ReporterJournalist Abdullah Al Faruk, former chief reporter of the Daily Kaler Kantho, succumbed to his injuries on Sunday morning. He was undergoing treatment at Square Hospital following a road accident in the capital’s Kakrail area on Saturday midnight. He was 53.Family sources said, Faruk sustained injuries after being hit by a truck while crossing the road adjacent to Rajmoni Cinema Hall in Kakrail area around 12:30am.An auto-rickshaw driver Anwar Hossain took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in a critical condition. Relatives later shifted him to Square Hospital.He also worked for the Daily Ajker Patrika, the Daily Samakal, the Daily Jugantor, the Daily Sangbad, the Daily Bhorer Dak, and other newspapers.Faruk left behind his wife, a daughter, a son and a host of relatives, colleagues, friends and well-wishers to mourn his death. He lived on the Tajmahal Road of Mohammadpur in the city. Faruk was son of Ziaur Rahman, from Santhia Upazila of Pabna district.His first Namaz-e-Janaza was held on National Press Club premises in the city around 2:00pm and the second Namaz-e-Janaza was held on Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU) premises at 2:35pm.People from different strata of life, including ministers, journalists and politicians joined the janaza.Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu, daily ‘Samakal’ Editor Golam Sarwar, PM’s Information Affairs Adviser Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, journalist leader Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul and National Press Club President Muhammad Shafiqur Rahman, among others, were present at the janaza.According to the National Press Club press release signed by its General Secretary Quamrul Islam Chowdhury, the journalist will be buried at Azimpur Graveyard.Meanwhile, several hundred journalists staged demonstration in front of the National Press Club around 3:00pm.They gave a 48 hours ultimatum to arrest the driver of the truck. The agitated journalists also declared to hold a human chain in front of the National Press Club around 11:00am of today (Monday). They will announce tough program from the human chain to press home their demand.
