A journalist of a national daily newspaper was badly assaulted by a group of Dhaka University (DU) staff on Sunday morning at the university’s Registrar Building.
The reporter was identified as Kabirul Islam Kanon, a third year student of Mass Communication and Journalism Department and University Reporter of the Bangla Daily Ittefaq.
According to Kabir, he was attacked by a group of staff of the registrar
building when he was filming empty administrative rooms during office hours.
They also snatched his mobile phone and hurled abusive words claiming themselves as activists of ruling Awami League’s student front Chhatra League, Kabir added.
The attackers were identified as Section Officer Nizam Uddin, Ahsanul Kabir and personal secretary to the university Registrar Sheikh Giyas Uddin.
Eyewitnesses said, Giyas Uddin claimed himself as a former Chhatra League leader and threatened Kabir not to write anything against them.
Kabir filed a written complaint with the DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Akhtaruzzaman demanding punishment of the attackers.
Meanwhile, Dhaka University Journalist’s Association (DUJA) President Asif Tasin and General Secretary Mahmudul Hasan Nayon issued a statement condemning this incident. They said that the DU staff attacked him for recording their activities. They also urged the authority to take proper steps after investigation.
Terming the incident as ‘unfortunate’, DU VC Professor Akhtaruzzaman said, we heard the incident. After investigation stern action will be taken against the culprits officials.
