Mohammad Amjad Hossain :
It was bolt from the blue to me when I was speaking to Nargisul Alam, wife of Moyeenul Alam on 9 October of 2018 in Toronto, Canada from Virginia, USA over telephone that Moyeenul Alam expired in June during Ramadan. Possibly it was my mistake that I did not get in touch by now. He used to live in two- room apartment of senior citizen in tenth floor overlooking Toronto Bay on the north shore of Lake Toronto. Moyeenul did not feel missing glamour of port city of Chittogram as he was witnessing Chittogram Bay in Toronto Bay from his balcony. We were in constant touch since my last visit to his abode in senior citizen apartment in Toronto in July of 2013. We were excommunicado for about three months. Possibly we spoke last in May this year. It was a great loss to journalistic circle in Bangladesh. His last contribution was to Daily Azadi in Chattogram and Naya Diganta of Dhaka.
Having joined English daily of Eastern Examiner of Chittagong as Sub-Editor in 1956 he switched over to another English newspaper of Daily Unity of Chattogram as its News Editor. Moyeenul Alam had shown interest in serving largest circulated but progressive Bengali newspaper of Daily Ittefaq of Tofazzal Hossain alias Manik Miah in 1957. Moyeenul Alam had served about fifty years in Daily Ittefaq as its Bureau Chief from Chattogram plus its business representative and for a brief period Pakistan Observer as its staff correspondent when Daily Ittefaq was closed down in June of 1969.
Moyeenul Alam had obtained diploma in News editing from International Press Institute in Zurich, Switzerland in 1964 while he obtained certificate of journalism trainer from International Institute of journalism in Berlin, Germany in 1985. Possibly Alam was the lone journalist from South Asia to cover Reagan-Gorvachev summit in Washington, DC in 1987 while he was invited by regime of President Ford under US International Visitors programme in 1975.
Moyeenul Alam possibly was exceptional in journalism in Bangladesh who had privileged to pay a visit to Germany, United Kingdom, Japan and the Philippines as well at the invitation of foreign governments while he visited France at the invitation Alliance Francaise in 1986.
On top of these Moyeenul Alam had the privilege to lecture students of Journalism in different Universities of the United States in 1975. Moyeenul Alam also visited Kuala Lumpur along with Bangladesh Press delegation in 1978 and this writer was fortunate enough to receive Bangladesh Press delegation and organized programme for them. As Bangladesh diplomat, I hosted dinner for Bangladesh Press delegation wherein Deputy Information Minister of Malaysia was present, apart from a few editors of Malaysian news media.
During journalism career Moyeenul Alam came close to charismatic leader of Bangladesh Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman whose Six-Point formula was projected first by Moyeenul Alam when no member of Awami League was aware of at the instruction of News Editor Serajuddin Hossain of Daily Ittefaq.
This writer came into contact with this legendary journalist in 1963 when I was serving central news organization of Radio Pakistan from Chittagong and contributed to his economic weekly: The Consumer Economist Alam was the proprietor and Chief Editor of the weekly. Moyeenul Alam authored as many as dozen books, including Ballads of a Bengali Belle and A Kite in the Azure plus translation a bouquet of poems and lyrics of Rabindranath Tagore. This writer was fortunate enough to receive as many as three books as presentation by Moyeenul Alam during my visit to Toronto in 2013. During my visit I discovered that Alam was a good painter.
Moyeenul Alam was the son of litterateur and journalist Mahbub-ul-Alam of Chittogram and left behind his wife and two sons and two daughters to mourn his death who expired at the age of 81. May Allah bless in Heaven.
