Slain journalist RM Saiful Alam Muku’s wife Hafiza Akhter Shirin on Friday said, ‘I’m tired of seeking justice in the murder case of my husband Mukul.’ She was speaking at a commemorating meeting marking the 21th anniversary of death of rebel journalist and also editor of Jashore based Bangla daily Runner, RM Saiful Alam Mukul.
‘I don’t seek judgment as I don’t get it,’ she added.
Journalist Union of Jashore arranged the programme at Jashore Press Club on Friday.
Chaired by Shahid Joy, president of the organisation, the meeting was addressed among others by Jahid Hasan Tukun, president, Jashore Press Club, Farazi Ahmed Syeed Bulbul, acting editor, Protidiner Katha, Mobinul Islam Mobin, editor, Gramer Kagoj, Anwarul Kabir Nantu, acting editor, Daily Loksamaj and Noor Islam, journalist leader.
The journalist was killed by some unidentified assailants near his residence at Bezpara in the town at around 10pm on August 30, 1998.
His father Golam Mazed, founding editor of the daily was also killed in torture by the then government during the era of HM Ershad.
A case was filed with Jashore Kotwali police station by the victim’s widow Hafiza Akhter Shirin on the next day after the killing without naming the killers. The CID later produced a charge sheet before a Jashore court accusing 24 persons including Tariqul Islam, former minister and late BNP standing committee member of Bangladesh Nationalist Party. His name was dropped from the case by the High Court later.
Talking to the Newsmen, Kabirul Alam Dipu, the only living brother of the Mukul told that the proceedings in the case were going on very slowly. ‘It would be better if I was not a brother of Mukul’, Dipu sighed.
Jashore Press Club, Journalists Union of Jashore, and Mukul’s family chalked out various programmes to mark the day.
The programmes include wearing of black badges, placing floral wreath at the grave, Milad Mahfil and discussion meetings.
