Torture in police custody: Jonny murder case verdict Sept 9

The Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court of Dhaka yesterday fixed September 9 to pronounce the verdict in the case filed on the charge of the murder of Ishtiaque Ahmed Jonny in Police custody in 2014.
Judge KM Emrul Kayes of the court fixed the date on Monday after submissions of the arguments on behalf of the defence and the prosecution.
Earlier, the court recorded the depositions of 22 prosecution witnesses in the case. The accused people are- City’s Pallabi Police Station’s the then Sub-Inspector (SI) Zahidur Rahman Zahid,
Assistant-Sub Inspectors (ASI) Rashedul Islam and Kamruzzaman Mintu. Apart from the three, two police sources- Sumon and Russel also pleaded not guilty during trial proceedings of the case.
Of the accused SI Zahid and Sumon are behind the bar, while others are on bail.
According to the case statement, on February 8, 2014, Jonny, his brother Imtiaz Hassan Rocky and three others were detained at Irani camp in Pallabi by a police team led by SI Zahidur Rahman Khan. Later, Jonny, 28, was allegedly tortured to death in police custody on July 13 the same year.
On February 17, 2015, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Maruf Hossain conducted a judicial inquiry, and found the involvement of Zahid and four others in the incident and submitted a judicial inquiry report to the Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court of Dhaka.
