At least four people were detained on Sunday afternoon as police dispersed a group of protesting job seekers who took position at the Shahbagh intersection in Dhaka yesterday (Saturday).
Under the banner of Bangladesh Sadharan Chhatra Parishad, students from different universities and colleges and job seekers blocked one of the busiest thoroughfares of the city Shahbagh intersection and chanting slogans to press for their demands from Saturday 12.30 pm. They maintained their positions at Shahbagh throughout the night bereaving rain halting traffic movements in the surrounding areas to press home their demands before police dispersed them around 10:45am.
Assistant Deputy Commissioner of Ramna Police Station HM Azimul Huq said that even though police on Sunday morning urged the protesters to withdraw the blockade, they did not pay heed to them.
He also said that detained four leaders of the platform would be interrogated about the activities of their organization.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Sadharan Chhatra Parishad convener Sanjoy Das claimed that five of their joint conveners of the organization Riana Haque, Nodi, Jubayer, Samia and Nadia had been detained by law enforcement agency.
He also vowed that they would continue their movement until their demands was met. Their next course of action would be announced soon.
Some activists, after being barred by law enforcers have taken position on Dhaka University’s Raju Memorial Sculpture covering faces with black clothes.
Currently, age limit for entering the public service is 30 years, while retirement age is 59 years. Retirement age of freedom fighters is 60 years.
