Joan Hill Kabiruddin, grandmother of singer Mehrin, passed away in Scotland. She was 85.
She breathed her last in her sleep on February 23 in Dundee, Scotland.
Joan was married to late AFM. Kabiruddin, son of Kalimuddin Ahmed of Bogura.
She came to then East Pakistan in early 1950’s and spent her life mostly in Bangladesh in social work, said a press relesae.
She worked for the women and children abused in the Liberation War of 1971 through Cheshire Homes.
Joan was recognized for her social work in Bangladesh by the British Government and was awarded the M.B.E. in 1994.
She worked as the Social Secretary to the British High Commissioner from the early 80’s to early 90’s and was also an active member of Chattogram Club, APWA, Zonta, founder member of WVA and Rotary Club.
She transformed herself from a girl born in Scotland to a Bengali. She spoke Bengali fluently, loved to paint and cook Bengali food. Joan left behind loving nephews, nieces, and lots of grandnieces and grandnephews.
