The authorities of Jagannath University will publish the draft constitution for its central student’s union’s (JnUCSU) for taking everyone’s opinion on the university’s website.
The decision was made at the 81st syndicate meeting of the university held at the VC office. The university Vice-chancellor Prof Dr Mijanur Rahman said that the draft constitution of JnUCSU would be published on the university’s website soon, seeking opinions from stakeholders and the draft will undergo necessary modifications based on stakeholders feedback, he added.
Meanwhile, the draft constitution will be available on the website for 90 days. Within this time, anyone can provide their opinion on it. Modifications and editions will be discussed during the next syndicate meeting following the suggestions.
On July 1 this year, authorities concerned formed a committee led by law department Prof Sarker Ali Akkas to provide necessary recommendations for amending the JnU Act, 2005, which had no section or sub-section regarding student union polls.
The committee submitted their report to the JnU VC on September 22.
According to the university sources, Jagannath College was converted into public university through the passage of a law in National Parliament in 2005. Since that no polls were held for central student’s union.
The first Jagannath College Central Students Union (JCCSU) polls was held on 1954, until 1969, 10 committees elected through elections. Though Jagannath College Central Student’s Union elections are to be held nearly every year, there have only been four since independence.
They were in 1972, 1979, 1986 and 1987. Though efforts were made several times, no election has been organised since then.
