Marking Pahela Boishakh, first day of Bangla New Year, the students of the Department of Drama and Music of Jagannath University (JnU) staged a play titled Abhigan Shakuntolam written by ‘Great Poet’ Kalidas at the central auditorium of the university on April 14.
Led by Dr Abdul Halim Pramanik, Chairman of the department in collaboration with Shams Shahriar Kabi, Lecturer of the department. The play was open for all.
Earlier, the teachers, officials and students of the university celebrated the first day of Bangla New Year amid traditional festivities and enthusiasm remembering the roots the nation has sprung from.
Department of Fine Arts of Jagannath University along with 70 other institutes of Old Dhaka brought out a huge Mongol Shovajatra, a well-being procession, at 9:30am with different kinds of banners, festoons and masks that paraded different main road of the old part of the capital. The former and incumbent students of the university thronged the Shovajatra wearing traditional dresses.
Chaired by JnU Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Mijanur Rahman, Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Sayeed Khokon was present as the chief guest in the well-being procession.
Besides, a two-day long cultural programme was arranged on the campus where there were Panta-Ilish stall, Pitha Ghor, and stall of Nakshi Kantha (Embroidered Quilt).
To mark the day, almost every shop of the old city also arranged Haal-Khata (opening of new ledgers closing the old one) in order to bridge with the clients and to recover the outstanding amount. The clients were entertained with sweets.
JnU VC Professor Dr Mijanur Rahman said, “To bring back the traditional cultural activities of Old Dhaka, we arrange a grandeurs programme to celebrate the Bangla New Year. The University will be turned into a platform of cultural activities of Old Dhaka in future.”
