Rabiul Alam, JnU :
Some 112 class representatives of different batches of Jagannath University at a meeting on Sunday decided to postpone all of their examinations and classes for indefinite period due to the recent COVID-19 outbreaks, alleging that the university is yet to take any steps to prevent the disease.
The students also demanded official suspension of all academic
activities. They alleged that the university hasn’t taken any steps, including providing primary materials, to make them safe from coronavirus. They even demanded establishment of special medical camps immediately on the university campus to test people for COVID-19. And if any students found infected, the university authorities must ensure proper treatment, they demanded.
They (students) have raised concerns that COVID-19 could spread easily in the classrooms and the university campus as about 22,000 people are in this university on a seven-acre area comprising students, teachers and staff, which is creating a high risk for regular students. Besides, Sadarghat terminal is also located nearby the university so many people move in the area everyday.
Some public events have also been postponed on the campus by different departments. Tousib Mahmud Shohan, a final year student of Physics Department alleged that authorities concerned have suspended many events in fear of coronavirus on the campus but they are yet to take any actions regarding students’ gathering.
“After talking with a total of 112 class representatives of the university, we decided to postpone exams, classes until situation becomes under-control,” Sohan added.
JnU Register Eng. Wahiduzzaman said that they have not taken any decision regarding suspension of academic activities rather they would direct departments to provide soaps, hand wash in toilets.
While asked about the decision of postponing academic activities by students, he said that after getting directions from different department chairmen and faculty deans they would decide the next course of action.
