Hurting religious sentiment: JnU student Tithi staged a kidnapping drama: CID

Jagannath University student Tithi Sarkar escaped herself on October 25 and got married going to Bagerhat with her boyfriend Shiplu Mallik and staged a kidnapping drama in order to create diversion from the allegation of her “hurting religious sentiment”, Criminal Investigation Department (CID) said during a press briefing in the city on Thursday.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Jamil Ahmed, of CID’s Cyber Crime Unit confirmed the matter in a press briefing at its headquarters in Malibagh.
Tithi returned to Capital on November 9. Smiling her presence, two teams of CID arrested her from the house of Shiplu’s relative in Madhabdi area of Narsingdi around 4pm on Wednesday and husband Shiplu from Kaptan Bazar in the city around 11:45am, the official said.
Earlier on November 2, the CID arrested Niranjan Baral (50) on charge of spreading false news on social media, claiming that the missing JnU student Tithi was rescued from CID’s Malibagh office while handcuffed.
The CID said they will seek remand for Tithi and Shiplu in a case filed under the Digital Security Act with Paltan Police Station on November 2 for making “derogatory” comments about religion on Facebook.
Earlier on October 23, some screenshots of Tithi’s Facebook account making derogatory comments about Islam and Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) went viral.
Following the incident, Tithi, a third-year student of the Zoology Department, JnU, went missing on October 25. Since then, the law enforcement agencies were looking for her.
Tithi’s sister, Smriti Rani Sarker filed a general diary (GD) on October 27 in this regard with Pallabi Police Station.
On October 26, authorities of JnU issued a suspension order against Tithi for reportedly hurting religious sentiments.
On November 5, Tithi was sued under the Digital Security Act for allegedly making derogatory comments about religion on Facebook.
