JnU prepares to celebrate ‘Pohela Boishakh’

‘Slow and Steady Wins the Race’ holding the slogan, the Jagannath University prepares itself for celebrating Pohela Boishakh (1st day of Bangla New Year) amid great festivity, like the previous years. That is why, the University authority is going to arrange a two-day long cultural programmes in line with the age-old traditions.
JnU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Mijanur Rahman declared the programmes at a meeting held in the VC’s conference room on Tuesday.
The official programmes will start at 9:30 in the morning with a two-day-long ‘Boishakhi Mela’ on the campus. Then a colourful procession will be brought out from there with different kinds of banners, festoons, and masks to be arranged by the Department of Fine Arts of the University.
The students of the department have already prepared themselves to celebrate the Bangla New Year. They have started to beautify their campus with many colours, drawing ‘alpona (sketch)’ and have taken much preparation for the ‘Mongal Shobhajatra (Well-being Procession)’.
Fine Arts Department Chairman Md Aloptagin Tushar said, “A mask exhibition will be arranged on the campus to mark the day reflecting our Liberation War and our local cultural traditions.”
Along with, Pogose School, Dhaka Collegiate School, Islamia Government School, Government Muslim High School, Heed International School, Bulbul Lolitokola Academy, the university authority is going to arrange a fair on the campus where there will be ‘Panta-Ilish’ stall, ‘Pitha Ghor’, and stall of ‘Nakshi Kantha (Embroidered Quilt)’.
Besides, a book fair will also be organised under the initiative of Md Roton, General Secretary of Pustok Byaboshayee Kallyan samity of Banglabazar. Almost every shop of the old city will arrange ‘Haal-khata (opening of new ledgers closing the old one)’ in order to bridge with the clients and to recover the outstanding amount. The clients are entertained with sweets.
Kotwali Thana Officer In-charge Abul Hasan said, “We will cover the old part of Dhaka to ensure the celebration of Pohela Boishakh peacefully.”
JnU VC Professor Dr Mijanur Rahman said, “To bring back the traditional cultural activities of old Dhaka, we are going to arrange a grandeurs programme to celebrate the Bangla New Year.”
 “The University will be turned into a platform of cultural activities of Old Dhaka in future”, he said.
However, the procession, the fair and cultural programmes will be open for all.
