The Rapid Action Battalion claimed on Thursday to have arrested an operative of a faction of banned extremist outfit Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) from the capital’s South Banasree area under Khilgaon Police Station.
The accused identified as Imam Mehedi Hasan alias Abu Jibril is a commander of the groups “‘Brigade Ad-Dar-e-Kutni'” and has been working to regroup the organisation, said RAB officials in a press briefing at its Kawran Bazar Medica Centre on Thursday.
“We arrested Imam Mehedi Hasan alias Abu Jibil, 29, along with two laptops, a mobile phone set, a passport, radical books and other evidences (of militancy) from South Banasree area at 12:30am on Thursday,’ said RAB-3 Commander Lieutenant Colonel Tuhin Muhammad Masud.
Mehedi Hasan, son of Md Khorshed Alam, came to Dhaka in 2011 and had a brief career in ramp modelling, said his brother Waliur Alam. BBA graduate from Darul Ihsan University, he ran a home decor business for some while.
Mehedi gave up his ramp modelling career due to opposition from his family. He went missing on May 4 and his mobile phone was shut since then. A general diary was filed with Khilgaon Police Station on May 5.
During preliminary interrogation, he confessed his links with the Gulshan Holey Artisan Bakery extremists and Kalyanpur extremist hideout, the RAB official said, adding Jibril has been entrusted with the task of recruiting new members, collecting financial assistance and looking after organisational matters for the extremist group.
The evidences collected from the scene and information extracted from the suspect made it clear that the ‘Brigade Ad-Dar-e-Kutni’ has the capacity of carrying out subversive acts, he also said.
