Rangamati Jubo League leader Nurul Islam Nayan was murdered as the attackers wanted to hijack his motorbike, according to police.
Nayan, who was the organising secretary of Rangamati’s Langadu unit of the ruling Awami League’s youth front, transported passengers on his motorbike. On Saturday, police said they have arrested two suspects over the killing. “It was not over a previous feud or enmity. Hijacking his motorcycle was the motive,” said Inspector Santosh Chakma of the Police Bureau of Investigation or PBI.
Nayan’s body was discovered on Jun 1 near a local highway in Khagrachhari’ Dighinala Upazila.
The following day, a protest march over his death in Rangamati’s Langadu turned violent, leading to attacks on several hundred homes of the local ethnic minority community.
The situation led the local administration to issue an order prohibiting any assembly or public gathering in Langadu Upazila after the mayhem. Bangalees blamed the murder on the Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity or PCJSS, which has rejected the allegations. Police said they detained 17-year-old Junel Chakma in Chittagong on Friday and later arrested 32-year-old Runel Chakma, while he was on his way to the port city from Dighinala.
