Bangladesh Bank organized the closing ceremony of SME and Special Programmes Department implemented and JICA Funded “Financial Sector Project. The aim of the project was to develop the country’s SME (Small and Medium Enterprise) sector.
To develop the medium to long term investment credit market for the small and medium enterprises of our country, a contract was signed on May 18, 2011 between the government and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Under the agreement, both parties undertook a project named-“Financial Sector Project” with a view to developing the Small and Medium Enterprises of the country.
Under this project, the Government of Japan provided 5000 million Japanese Yen to develop the medium to long term investment credit market for the small and medium enterprises of our country and build capacity of Bangladesh Bank and participating financial institutions. Under Bank and Financial Institutions Division (BFID) of Ministry of Finance, SME & Special Programmes Department of Bangladesh Bank has implemented this project.
Project Implementation Unit of SME & Special Programmes Department and Consultants of this project organized a closing ceremony on Wednesday at Amari Dhaka Hotel in the city.
Dr. Aitur Rahman, Governor of Bangladesh Bank attended the program as the chief guest. Md. Abdul Mannan, Member in Charge, Planning Commission, Mikio Hataeda, Chief Representative, JICA Bangladesh Office, Takeshi Matsunaga, Minister, Embassy of Japan in Bangladesh, Gokul Chand Das, Additional Secretary, BFID attended the program as the special guests. This program was chaired by Nirmal Chandra Bhakta, Executive Director of Bangladesh Bank. Officials from different Ministry and JICA, Chief Executives and Head of SME of bank/NBFIs, SME entrepreneurs, General Manager and Deputy General Managers of SME & Special Programmes Department of Bangladesh Bank also attended the program.
Swapan Kumar Roy, General Manager of SME & Special Programmes Department thanked everyone for their support and help in implementing this project in his inauguration speech. He presented different aspects of the success of this project. A video documentary on the project was showed in the program.
Abdul Mannan, Member of Planning Commission and Gokul Chand Das, Additional Secretary of BFID, made speech as special guests. Mikio Hataeda, Chief Representative of JICA Bangladesh Office and Mr. Takeshi Matsunaga, Minister, Embassy of Japan in Bangladesh, admired the development of Bangladesh in their speech as special guests.
Dr. Atiur Rahman, Governor of Bangladesh Bank, in his speech as chief guest, thanked Government of Japan and JICA for their partnership role in the SME sector development of Bangladesh.
He stated in his speech that, Bangladesh Bank focused on prioritizing credit flow to SME sector specially manufacturing and service sector; and in the last five years the disbursement of SME credit has satisfactorily increased. He mentioned that, JICA funded FSPDSME made significant contribution in this uptrend. He also mentioned that, refinance and pre-finance to the PFIs from the revolving fund of this project will continue in future and invited banks/NBFIs to take this opportunity. He also thanked the SME entrepreneurs who have taken loans from this fund and helped creating employment.
