A local BNP leader was chopped to death by unknown miscreants in Nimtala bridge area at Chapali village in Kaliganj upazila on Tuesday morning.
The deceased was identified as Ismail Hossain,55, vice-chairman of Kaliganj upazila unit of BNP and son of late Mandu Mandal of the village.
Anwar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Kaliganj Police Station, said a group of unknown miscreants attacked Ismail, also a former panel mayor of Kaliganj municipality, with sharp weapons while he was going for a local
arbitration and chopped him indiscriminately in the area at around 8:30am, leaving him severely injured.
Locals rescued him and rushed him to Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex.
Later, as his condition started deteriorating, he was shifted to Jessore Medical College Hospital where he was declared dead at around 9:30am.
