Jhenaidah Correspondent :
A farmer in a Jhenaidah village innovated a spikelet grain paddy that produces double grains. Farmer Makbul Hossain of Moheshwarchanda village under Kaliganj Upazila innovated the variety which is deep water tolerance. The name of the variety was titled as ‘Dosotin’ (co-wives).
The area of rice production might be expanded even on fallow and low lands that might increase the rice production throughout the country, said Makbul Hossain.
Makbul said, Subash Biswas, a director of a non-government organisation ASD had provided him 20 grams of seeds of the variety four years back. Since then he has been farming the double grain rice continuously on his plots as an experimental basis, had achieved the target of yield in the area. As there was no double gram rice in the locality, he was keen interest to work with the variety. He produced seed beds and transplanted the plants at a corner of the rice plot to witness the progress.
Every year the area of farming was increased gradually and brought success to produce the same of his land. To ensure a deep water tolerance variety, he had transplanted the plants on his three decimals of land on low lands which proved it deep water and fallow land friendly variety.
The variety had provided 60 kilograms of paddy. He had preserved 20 kilograms of rice and sold remaining 40 kilograms at Taka 100 among the local farmers. The variety is almost free form any diseases and pest. As the variety provides double grain, the spikelets are virtually thick, while the size of grain was smaller, the farmer said.
ASD director Subash Biswas when contacted said, he had witnessed the variety in Nepal in 1980s. He had produced the variety in Bangladesh with some seed that he brought from Nepal as an experimental basis and achieved almost fruitful results. Since than he had donated some seeds to Makbul Hossain to experiment the same himself.
Biswas said, there are huge varieties of rice in our country. But there was no double grain variety which could be cultivated in deep water and fallow lands.
