Jhenaidah Correspondent :
Boro paddy could not bring smile on the face of the farmers in Jhenaidah this season like the past. The least market price of the crops has slapped the hope and aspiration of the farmers.
The farmers who borrowed from the non-government organisation are the worst sufferers as they are not in a position to make the weekly installment .
When this correspondent visited some paddy plots at Brahimpur and Katlagari villages in Sailkupa upazila in Jhenaidah and talked to farmers and found them frudtrated.
Farmer Margubar Rahman Mia and Mahfuzur Rahman Kala of village Kashimpur in Sailkuapa said, they are happy with the yields of their paddy in the current season Margubar said, he had transplanted Boro paddy on his 1.5 bighas of land. He is expected to harvest about 42 maunds of Boro paddy.
Mahfuzur said , at least Tk 35 thousand is spent to cultivate paddy on a hectare of land, while the farmers can hardly receive Taka 32 thousand from the same plot. Each maund (40 kilogram) of paddy is sold in the market between Taka 680 and 730, he said.
The farmer said, a good number of farmers borrowed money from the non-government organizations with high interest. But the money is not realized when they sale the same to traders. The minimum price for each maund of paddy should be 850 to 900, they said.
The Department of Agriculture Extension office sources said, the farmers in the six upazilas Jhenaidah sadar, Kaliganj, Kotchandpur, Moheshpur, Saailkupa and Hariankundu brought their 81,275 hectares of land as against the DAE target for 83,636 hectares in the current season.
A total of 322,016 tones of rice are expected in the season. The framers in the district had harvested 343,421 tones of paddy from 86,325 hectares of land in the last season.
DAE Deputy Director Joynul Abedin when contacted said, the harvesting of the Boro paddy was almost completed in the district. The farmers are harvesting better this season.
The farmers are going to sale the paddy from the farmers directly at the rate of Taka 23 each kilogram. The initiative started from May 5 this season will serve the interest of the farmers, deputy director said.
