Bangladesh Jewellers Samity (Bajus) has withdrawn their countrywide indefinite strike scheduled to begin on Sunday following a government assurance to formulate a gold import policy.
The decision was taken after the assurance from the Prime Minister’s Office that the government will formulate the gold import policy soon and no businessman will face harassment until its formulation, Bajus senior vice president Enamul Haque Khan told UNB on Saturday.
“We’ve decided to call the strike off as FBCCI president M Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin informed us (Bajus) that he was assured by the PM office that the gold import policy will be formed soon and no one will be harassed until its formulation,” he said.
Earlier on Wednesday, Bajus threatened to go on an indefinite countrywide strike from Sunday demanding immediate formulation of a gold import policy.
They also demanded the return of the gold and diamond ornaments seized from Apan Jewellers within the next 48 hours.
The association demanded immediate removal of Director General of Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) Dr Moinul Khan accusing him of making a blueprint to destroy the jewellery sector.
The CIID deposited 536 Kg of gold ornaments and 7,369 pieces of diamond ornaments seized from five outlets of Apan Jewellers to Bangladesh Bank as the leading jewellery brand failed to show valid documents for those.
