Yet another schoolboy injured in the Jessore picnic bus accident has died, taking the death toll in the February tragedy to nine.
On Feb 15, seven children had died and 50 others were injured when a picnic bus carrying Benapole Government School children had plunged into a ditch at Chougachha Upazila.
Later, on Feb 28, another boy succumbed to his injuries.
Injured Yanur Rahman, 12, died at the Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka at about 7:30am on Wednesday, her mother Aleya Begum, a resident of Benapole’s Chhotoachrha village, told bdnews24.com.
Another student Mohammad Ekramul, 10, a classmate of Yanur, had also been sent to the same hospital for specialised treatment but he died on Feb 28, said Benapole Upazila Education Officer Ohidul Islam.
Yanur’s uncle Kamal Hossain told bdnews24.com that the child’s body might be brought back home by Wednesday evening. He would be laid to rest at the family graveyard that very night.
Reckless driving, inexperienced drivers, deplorable road conditions, and rundown vehicles are usually blamed for the recurring accidents, in which over 4,000 people lose their lives in road accidents in the country every year.
