A group of activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, student wing of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Tuesday locked up its central office in protest against newly-imposed age limits for members of the student body.
They also demanded cancellation of the announcement about dissolving their central committee.
The leaders of the recently-dissolved JCD central committee gathered in front of the party office at about 11am and started demonstration there. At one stage, they locked the main gate and continued their protest programme.
The protesters were chanting slogans in favour of their demand for cancellation of the age limit.
They said, they want BNP to form a short-term JCD committee without keeping any age ceiling.
Later, BNP Vice-Chairman Barkatullah Bulu, Organising Secretary Fazlur Huque Milon, Publicity Secretary Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie, and Training Affairs Secretary ABM Mosharraf Hossain arrived at the scene.
But the protestors obstructed these four BNP leaders from entering the office and got into an argument with them.
BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and some other party leaders were staying inside the office.
After talking to the protesters,
Fazlul Huque Milon told the journalists that the decision about the committee was taken by the party. He said it is not unusual for some people to be dissatisfied and angry with the decision. He said, “We will listen to all complaints they have against this decision and convey the message to BNP’s acting chairperson.”
On June 3, the central committee of BNP’s student body Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal was dissolved.
A BNP press release, signed by BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said that a new JCD committee would be formed within the next 45 days based on the opinions of its councillors.
It said those who will contest election for different posts of JCD will have to be primary members, students of any educational institution in Bangladesh and must pass SSC and equivalent examination after 2000.
On October 14, 2014, JCD’s last committee was formed with Rajib Ahsan as its President and Akramul Hasan its General Secretary.
