The BNP leaders are in embarrassing situation over defining the age limit to form the new committee of Jatiyajabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), student wing of the party.
The party has already fixed the age limit stating that the candidates who passed SSC exam before 2000 will not be able to be leader of the new committee.
The immediate past central leaders of the JCD have been staging demonstrations in front of the party office in the capital just after dissolving the committee on June 3.
The JCD leaders and activists also padlocked the BNP’s central office and involved in hot talking with the party’s central leaders.
They also obstructed BNP Vice Chairman Barkatullah Bulu, Organising Secretary Fazlur Huque Milon, Publicity Secretary Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie, and Training Affairs Secretary ABM Mosharraf Hossain in entering the party office on June 6.
BNP held its standing committee meeting on Saturday night where its Acting Chaiman Tarique Rahman attended over skype.
A member of Standing Committee placed the JCD issue but other members including Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir stopped him and said the former presidents and general secretaries of JCD have been working to resolve the crisis.
Organising Secretary Fazlur Huque Milon said, it is very much embarrassing for us as the JCD men are still on demonstration.
“We are trying to resolve the problems. I believe that the demonstrators will not do
anything which will go against the party’s image,” he said.
Meanwhile, a faction of JCD on Sunday resumed demonstration in front of the party’s headquarters demanding removal of age limit to join the new committee.
Several hundred disgruntled leaders and activists of the recently dissolved JCD central committee protested at Nayapaltan for about two hours from 11:00am.
They announced to stage another two-hour protest on Monday as well.
The same group had demonstrated in front of the BNP office on June 11 and kept the main gate of the headquarters locked for 11 hours. They postponed their protests after some senior BNP leaders said their demands would be met.
Azmal Hossain Pilot, senior vice-president of the recently dissolved JDC committee, said they resumed their protest since BNP leaders did not fulfill their promises.
He said they would demonstrate peacefully and mount pressure on the BNP higher-ups. Azmal said they wanted the BNP to form a short-term JCD committee that would not have any age ceiling.
JCD’s central committee was dissolved on June 3. A BNP press release, signed by Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, said a new committee would be formed within the next 45 days based on the opinions of its councillors.
It said candidates planning to contest for various posts will have to be primary members, students of any educational institutions in Bangladesh and must have passed SSC and equivalent examinations after 2000.
JCD’s last committee was formed on October 14, 2014, with Rajib Ahsan as its president and Akramul Hasan as general secretary.
