UNB, Chittagong :
A local Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leader was killed in an attack by miscreants at Chandrapur in Hathazari municipality on Monday.
The deceased is M Sohel Rana, 24, a member of Hathazari municipality unit JCD and son of Nur Mohammad of the area.
Police and witnesses said miscreants tried to swoop on Sohel in the afternoon while he was passing by the Upazila Health Complex area.
As he started running to escape the attack, they hurled bricks at him and he collapsed on the ground after being hit.
Locals took him to the upazila hospital from where he was shifted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH). However, the JCD leader was declared dead at the CMCH in the evening.
Officer-in-charge of Hathazari Police Station Belal Uddin Jahangir said a chase and counter-chase took place between the followers of BNP leaders Wahidul Alam and Mir Nasir Uddin at a programme in the afternoon. “Sohel was killed after being hit by bricks thrown by the supporters of Wahidul,” he claimed.
Meanwhile, central JCD blamed Bangladesh Chhatra League for the incident.
In a statement, acting JCD President Mamunur Rashid Mamun and acting General Secretary M Asaduzzaman Asad alleged that a group of 25-30 BCL men hacked Sohel to death.
