Police arrested General Secretary of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal Akramul Hasan Mintu from the capital’s Purana Paltan area on Friday.
Police picked up Akramul when he was going to Jatiya Press Club to join a programme on Friday noon on the occasion of BNP’s Senior Vice-Chairman Tarique Rahman’s 53rd birthday.
The JCD leader was wanted in two cases according to Paltan Police Station.
The JCD, the student wing of BNP, in a press release, protested and condemned at the arrest of Akramul. The central leaders of the organisation termed the arrest illogical
and demanded immediate release of the general secretary.
“JCD general secretary was arrested near the Jatiya Press Club when he went there to join a programme organised jointly by Bangladesh Chhatra Forum and Uttaranchal Chhatra Forum. It was a non-political programme. We did not know any logical cause behind his arrest,” the press release said.
Meanwhile, in a statement, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir expressed deep concern at the police action against him.
He said Akramul Hasan had been arrested as part of unabated arrest of BNP leaders and activists across the country.
The government has been arresting the Chhatra Dal leaders to destroy young leadership against the ongoing misrule, he said, demanding Akramul’s immediate release.
