Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) arrived at Madhu’s canteen of Dhaka University, after nine years relating to the Dhaka University Central Student Union election on March 11.
BNP-backed student organisation stopped holding programmes on the campus amid fears of torture and abuse since 2010. Around 100 leaders and activists of the student front gathered at the canteen around 10:45 am on Wednesday led by its central and university chapters’ President and Secretary.
In the meantime, ruling Awami League backed Chhatra League and other left student bodies also took position in the canteen and chanting slogans.
While addressing a press conference, JCD central unit President Rajib Ahsan pressed home their seven point demands including fresh schedule of the polls and co-existence of all active student bodies on the campus.
Their Other demands include free organisational practices, setting up of polling centers in academic building instead of halls, and bringing a change in eligibility of candidates by setting a specific academic session instead of fixing age limit 30 and ensuring security of their candidates during election campaigning. Among others, JCD General Secretary Akram Hossain, DU unit JCD President Al Mehedi Hasan Talukder and General Secretary Basar Siddiqi were present at the press conference.
Akram Hossain said, if administration could ensure co-existence that would help to bring back glorious past of student politics.
Chhatra League DU chapter President Sanjit Chandra Das said that they did not ever impede any political activities of regular students. However, the president warned if anyone tries to mar the congenial atmosphere of the campus, we (Chhatra League) would give appropriate reply. Earlier on February 7, Chhatra Dal brought a procession in the campus and submitted a memorandum to the university Vice-Chancellor Professor Md Akhtaruzzaman to press their demands.
