The grand opening ceremony of the 12-team new-look jb Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) Football will be held at MA Aziz Stadium in the port city of Chittagong today (Wednesday) evening.
Chittagong City Mayor AJM Nasiruddin is expected to be the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony that will start at 7:30 pm.
The three-hour long opening ceremony will feature a concert to be performed by star singer Momtaz and country’s leading musical bands, including LRB of Ayub Bachchu, followed by a massive firework.
Although the opening ceremony of the country’s most prestigious professional football league will be held on Wednesday, the competition will start on Sunday (July 24) at the same venue with two matches billed for the day.
Defending champions Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club is likely to play the opening match with Arambagh Krira Sangsad while Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra will play Uttar Baridhara Club in the other opening day match.
State-owned BTV and Boishakhi Television will telecast all the matches live.
Earlier on Monday, logo and trophies of the BPL were unveiled in a colourful ceremony at Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in the city where State Minister for Youth and Sports Dr Biren Sikder was the chief guest.
Participating teams are: Sheikh Jamal DC, Sheikh Russel KC, Dhaka Mohammedan SC Ltd, Dhaka Abahani Ltd, Brothers Union Club, Muktijoddha SKC, Team BJMC, Soccer Club, Feni, Ctg Abahani Ltd, Rahmatganj MFS, Arambagh KS and Uttar Baridhara Club.
A total of 132 matches will be held in the four venues — Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka, MA Aziz Stadium in Chittagomg, Sylhet District Stadium and Rafiq Uddin Bhuiyan Stadium in Mymensingh.
