The government has decided to observe ‘Jatka Protection Week-2017’ from March 11 to March 17 for increasing mass awareness among people to stop catching, trading and marketing of jatka.
The decision came from a meeting of the National Taskforce Committee for hilsa preservation at the Ministry of Fisheries and
Livestock on Wednesday, said a handout. Fisheries and Livestock Minister Muhammed Sayedul Hoque will brief about the week at a press conference at the Matsya Bhaban on March 11 and a mass gathering and a colorful rally will be held in Kalapara of Patuakhali district.
The law enforcers will conduct drives at different fisheries markets in the upazila to stop catching, trading and marketing of jatka. Besides, Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI) will make workshop while several mobile courts will conduct drives across the country on March 17.
Presided over by Fisheries and Livestock Minister Muhammed Sayedul Hoque, the meeting was attended, among others, by high officials of Water Resources Ministry, Information Ministry, Prime Minister Office, Rapid Action Battalion (Rab), Police, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Bangladesh Coast Guard.
