Main opposition Jatiya Party on Monday proposed formation of an interim government proportionally with representatives from all the parties that have currently representation in parliament after the announcement of schedule for the 11th national election.
A 25-member Jatiya Party delegation, led by its Chairman and
Prime Minister’s special envoy HM Ershad, joined the Election Commission’s dialogue at Nirbachan Bhaban in the city.
The party placed an eight-point proposal at the meeting held with Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda in the chair.
The party proposed that the interim government will be formed dissolving parliament and the members of interim cabinet will have to be appointed on the recommendations of political parties’ chiefs.
Jatiya Party also proposed deployment of armed forces throughout the country during the election.
After the meeting, Ershad told reporters that they placed the proposal for formation of an interim government in line with the Constitution, and BNP should not be there in the interim government as the party has no representation in Parliament now. Expressing his hope that the next election will be fair and neutral acceptable, he said the EC’s promises made at the meeting are trustworthy.
“Their (EC’s) words seemed to be believable to us. They (EC) are determined to make this election acceptable to all,” Ershad said.
Replying to a question if the Jatiya Party proposed formation of an interim government without representation from a major party BNP, he said, “The interim government shall be formed with the parties that have representation in Parliament. It’s unfortunate, but the reality is that BNP cannot be in the interim government as the party is not there (in Parliament).”
He, however, said the formation of interim government is beyond their jurisdiction. “The government shall form the interim government. The government did last time. We hope they’ll do this time as well.”
Replying to a question if he thinks BNP will join the next election or whether the polls will be the participatory one, Ershad said, he hopes that BNP will join it.
About army deployment, the former army chief said, “We’ve told them that public perception is that the election would be fair if the army are deployed.”
Ershad added that the EC assured them of taking tough action against any official if the EC deems that s/he works against election and in favour of any party.
Responding to another question, he said there is no need for the EC to arrange anymore dialogue with the political parties over arrangement of a fair election. “I think this is enough. We all are happy with their promises. They’re determined to conduct a fair election. I think they (CEC and election commissioners) have good will and want to write their names in the history.”
Answering to another question over Rohingyas, Ershad said it will be a tough job to solve Rohingya crisis. “We didn’t get support of China, Russia and even our friendly country India.”
