Jatiya Party chief HM Ershad has started distributing nomination letters to candidates of around 45 constituencies at the party’s Banani office on Monday evening.
Awami League gave 45 constituencies for Jatiya Party while they are bargaining for two more constituencies, Presidium Member Sunil Shuvo Roy told The New Nation last night.
HM Ershad will contest from Dhaka-17 and Rongpur -3 constituencies and JP’s former secretary Ziauddin Ahmed Bablu will contest from Nilphamari -4, though he won the last parliamentary election from Chattogram-9 constituency.
There was still exists some uncertainty over how many seats it will get from the Awami League-led Grand Alliance.
After the sale of 2,865 nomination forms, 780 name were for the second phase. Consideration as many as 300 candidates were listed for final selection.
Although a 15-member board was formed to pick up candidates, its members do not have a significant role in selecting the party’s candidates. The party chief will take final decision himself.
The party initially decided to approve candidates in all 300 seats. Many of the nominees were disappointed after the party backtracked from the decision.
Presidium member and Dhaka-13 aspirant Shafiqur Rahman Sentu said, “The Grand Alliance has already named Sadek Khan to run from my constituency. So I have a slim chance of becoming a candidate. Let’s see what the party decides.”
