Jasim Polli Mela begins on Jan 15 in Faridpur

Brisk preparations are afoot to hold the fortnight long Polli Mela (village fair) under the style of Jasim Polli Mela commemorating the 113th birth anniversary of pollikabi Jasimuddin will begin here from January 15 at village Gobindapur on the bank of river Kumar adjacent to the ancestral home and grave of the poet.

An annual ritual since 1996 this fair attracts thousands of people that depict the folk culture of rural Bangladesh along with modern entertainment persuasions presented by the artists of local and other places of the country.
It may be mentioned here that though the birth day is on January 1 but the fair was shifted to avoid overlapping of another fair which is presently going on in the town organized by Faridpur Chamber of Commerce and Industries.
About two hundred temporary stalls will be set up in the fair premises along with decorated permanent stage (Jasim Mancha) for cultural performances.
The stalls will consist mostly with handicrafts and rural oriented cottage goods both for display and sale. Arrangements have also been made for other recreational options.
To make the fortnight long fair secured and pleasant all necessary measures including security, electricity, water supply, fire services, sanitation and improvement of connecting roads have been done. A colorful souvenir will be brought out to mark the occasion.
Renovation of the graveyard located by the side of the fair site where the poet is having his eternal sleep under the shadow of a pomegranate (Dalim)tree with a sign board engraving “Here is the grave of your grandma under the pomegranate tree, I have soaked for last thirty years with the tears of my two eyes”. The sign board carries famous stanza from his immortal poem ‘Kabor’.
