UNB, Jashore :
A tribunal here on Monday sentenced a man to seven years imprisonment for selling his daughter to a brothel in Faridpur district.
After examining records and witnesses, Jashore Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 Judge Amit Kumar Dey handed down the verdict and fined Tk 50,000 to the convict Shariful Islam, 43, of Bagharpara upazila.
According to the prosecution, Shariful had married to Sufiya Begum, daughter of Phul Mia of Bagharpara upazila and the couple got divorced over a year after been blessed with a daughter.
Since then Sufiya along with her daughter used to live at her parent’s house. After 15 years of the incident, Shariful came to visit his daughter, now in her teen, at the house of Phul Mia and claimed his fatherhood on February 5, last year.
Later, he along with his daughter went out of the house in the name of roaming places but did not return to the house of Phul Mia and since then both remained missing.
After eight months, Bangladesh National Women Lawyer’s Association (BNWLA) rescued the girl from a brothel in Faridpur district as Shariful sold his daughter to the brothel on March 22, last year.
On information, Phul Mia filed a case with Bagharpara Police Station against Shariful under human trafficking act.
Nasima Khatun, a co-coordinator of Jashore BNWLA, said they rescued the girl and took her to a shelter home where the girl has been living for over a year.
