The Japanese government has decided to extend approximately US$32.5 million as additional support to the Rohingya refugees and host communities in Cox’s Bazar.
The humanitarian assistance will be extended through site management of refugee camps, providing food, shelter, medical services and trainings, and WASH facilities and forest regeneration under United Nations and international organizations, according to a press release of Japanese Embassy issued on Tuesday.
It added the decision was taken on February 7.
The aid would be given through UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), the Un International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UNWomen), the World Food Programme (WFP), the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the Global Partnership for Education (GPE), the Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF, also known in English as Doctors Without Borders).
Since the massive influx of refugees into Bangladesh in August 2017, the government of Japan had granted approximately U$50.2 million to international organisations. With the latest support, the total assistance reached approximately US$82.7 million, said the press release.
According to the UN, more than 750,000 Rohingya refugees, mostly women and children, have fled Myanmar and crossed to Bangladesh after Myanmar forces launched a crackdown on the minority Muslim community in August 2017.
