Members of the Hindu Community celebrated the Janmashtami, one of their major religious festivals, marking the holy birth anniversary of the Lord Sri Krishna in the port city as elsewhere in the district with due festivity and religious fervour.
As part of their 4-day programmes Sree Sree Janmashtami Udjapan Parishad ( SSJUP), Chattogram brought out a grand procession titled ” Mohashovajatra” from J M Sen hall premises, the central venue of the Janmashtami festival at Andarkillah Crossing and concluded at the same place after parading important streets of the city.
Anindo Bennarjee, Assistant High Commissioner of India inaugurated the Mohashovajatra from Andarkillah premises at 10 am on Friday.
SSJUP vice president Babu Alok Das, presided over the Mohashovajatra inaugural function while city Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin, attended the function as chief guest.
Commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police Mahbubur Rahman, editor of the daily Bhorer Kagoj Shyamol Dutto, and general secretary of Chattogram south district Awami League Mofizur Rahman among others addressed the function.
The members of the Hindu Community brought out a grand jubilant procession displaying the sportive events on the life of Krishna on the first day of four-day long Janmashtami function in the city.
Thousands of Hindu devotees irrespective of ages, colour, cast and creed attend the procession.
The four day long programmes also include illumination of temples, arranging discussion meeting and distribution of sweets, holding Rishi and Boisnab conference, recitation from the holy books (Pabitra Namkirtan), exhibition, scholarship handover among meritorious students and distribution of Prashad, fasting, offering puja, special prayers and recitation from the holy Geeta and feeding to destitute .
CMP and district police have taken up adequate security measures to celebrate the festival peacefully.
