The holy Janmashtami, one of the major festivals of the Hindu community, marking the birth of Lord Krishna was celebrated in the capital and elsewhere across the country yesterday with due religious fervour and enthusiasm.
According to the Hindu Puran (mythology), Sri Sri Krishna was born on the eighth tithi of Shukla Pakkha (fortnight of the
new moon) in the Bangla month of Bhadra and he takes birth in ages in the world to safeguard the good and pious people from the hands of bad-naughty persons to establish truth, justice and beauty in all sphere of the society. Different political, socio-cultural and religious organisations have chalked out elaborate programmes in observance of the holy Janmashtami. The day was a public holiday.
In separate messages, President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina greeted members of the Hindu community on the occasion of Janmashtami. To mark the festival, President Abdul Hamid also hosted a reception to the eminent citizens of Hindu community at Bangabhaban.
