Janmashtami celebrated

UNB, Dhaka :The Hindu community of the country celebrated Janmashtami, the birth of Lord Krishna on Saturday with due festivity and religious fervour.Different socio-cultural and religious organisations, including Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad and Mahanagar Sarbajanin Puja Committee, observed the day with various programmes.On the occasion, colourful Janmashtami processions displaying the events of the life of Krishna were organised in the capital, divisional cities and districts. Other programmes of the day included puja, prayer, discussion, cultural function, distribution of ‘prasad’ and feeding the poor.President Abdul Hamid hosted a reception at Bangabhaban on the occasion of Janmashtami. Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha, Religious Affairs Minister Principal Matior Rahman and State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Narayon Chandra Chanda were present at the reception.Hindu religious personalities, leaders of the community and people from various professions of the community joined the reception.The High Commissioner of India and the Ambassador of Nepal to Bangladesh were also present on the occasion. According to Hindu religion, Lord Vishnu incarnated in the universe as Lord Krishna in the prison of Raja Kangsa on this day, the eighth day of “Shukla Pakkha” (bright fortnight) in the month of Bengali calendar year Bhadra in Dwapara Yuga in order to protect “Dharma” from the hands of devils.Sri Krishna was born to Devaki and her husband Vasudeva in Mathura to which Krishna’s parents Vasudeva and Devaki belonged. The day was a public holiday.
