The Namaz-e-janaza of former Attorney General (AG) and Constitution expert Mahmudul Islam was held on the Supreme Court premises in city on Wednesday afternoon.
Eminent jurists, senior lawyers, ministers, politicians and leaders of Supreme Court Bar Association and Bangladesh Bar Council joined Islam’s Namaz-e-janaza held after Johr prayer.
Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq, Deputy Speaker Fazle Rabbi Miah, former Chief Justices M Ruhul Amin, M Tafazzal Islam and Md.
Muzammel Hossain, Justice Md Abdul Wahhab Miah, Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, Justice Mirza Hussain Haider, Justice Md. Nizamul Huq, former Adviser to the Caretaker Government Barrister Mainul Hosein, Barrister Amirul Islam, Barrister Rokanuddin Mahmud, Supreme Court Bar Association President Khandker Mahbub Hossain and Secretary AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon, Bangladesh Bar Council Chairman and Attorney General Mahbubey Alam and Vice-Chairman Abdul Baset Majumder were present in the Janaza, among others.
His body was later taken to his village home in Rangpur for burial. Earlier, the body of Mahmudul Islam was brought in the Court premises at 1:15pm where he spent about 46 years practising law.
After arrival of his body, Chief Justice SK Sinha, Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq, Justices, senior lawyers of Supreme Court and High Court and leaders of Supreme Court Bar Association and Bangladesh Bar Council paid last tribute to him.
Mahmudul Islam breathed his last on February 15 at the age of 80 in the city’s United Hospital where he was under treatment since December 2015 as he was suffering from lung disease. Earlier he underwent lung surgery in Singapore.
Mahmudul Islam was survived by his wife, two sons, relatives, colleagues and a host of well-wishers to mourn his death.
Born in Rangpur in 1936, Mahmudul Islam passed his higher secondary from Rangpur Carmichael College.
After obtaining his law degree from Dhaka University, Mahmudul started his career at Rangpur Bar and later got enrolled at the High Court on June 16, 1967. He worked as a junior with lawyer Birendra Nath Chowdhury and then with Syed Ishtiak Ahmed.
His father Azizul Islam was a renowned lawyer in Rangpur.
After the independence of Bangladesh, he obtained his LLM degree from Indiana University in the US. Mahmudul Islam became Assistant Attorney General in 1972.
He served as the Attorney General between 1998 and 2001. He resigned on the very day the government was sworn-in after the Eighth Parliamentary Elections.
Mahmudul Islam could not appear in the court due to his illness since November 2015.
He was the first lawyer to write a book, Constitutional Law of Bangladesh, researching the Constitution. His other books include ‘Law of Civil Procedure’ and ‘Interpretation of Statistics and Document’.
Lawyers and even the judges sometimes used to take Mahmudul’s opinion as a substantial constitutional expert when any question on interpretation of the Constitution and law arose. He never wanted to be focused in the media.
