Jamuna erosion threatens several villages under Kazipur upazila

More than 500 families in several villages under Kazipur upazila headquarter and pourashava in Sirajganj district are passing their day’s in utter anxieties as erosion by the river Jamuna has devoured large portions of the flood control dyke at several point. Water Development Board WDB sources said , the affected villages are Singrabari, Bawyekhola, Shovoegacha, Shouth Tola, Khutbandi, Maghai, Maizbari, Dekuria, Bill Tolah, Tazerpara, Polashpur.
Kazipur Sadar UP Chairmen Kamruzzaman told The New Nation that around 10 kilometers area of Maghaibazar is now under the threat erosion by the river Jamuna. He said the river has already devoured 2000 bighas of Aman paddy fields, more than 400 houses and business establishments.
Nearby 500 families of Kazipur upazila have been rendered homeless in the last three years, he added.
Moyen Mondol of Maghai bazar are said, “We are passing sleeping nights in the wake of the continuing erosion.” Some people of this area have already shifted their houses to safer places.
Kazipur pourashava Mayor Prof Abdus Salam told the newsmen that they have already applied to the local government secretary to sanction Tk. 23 crore for protection of the Kazipur upazila and pourashava embankment.
