Jamuna continuous erosion in Nagorpur, Tangail

With continuous erosion by the river Jamuna taking a serious turn, over eroding roads and educational institutions and croplands have been devoured at nagorpur in Tangail.

Millions of people along the river are spending their days in extreme anxiety and uncertainty due to such continuous .

The worst affected areas are Doptior, Solimabad, Dhuboria and Bharra union in Nagarpur upazila.

As seen on the surface, some of these people are busy moving from house to house, some are looking at the river with tearful eyes! Hundreds of families are moving elsewhere to escape the destruction.

The upazila known as delta is on one side of the monstrous Yamuna, on the other side is the disastrous Dhaleshari river. It is difficult to say when and what these two rivers do. The people of this upazila cannot estimate how many more houses will disappear under the river.

Locals said that every year during the flood season, relief programs like throwing sand bags (GEO bags) are taken by the Water Development Board. It is not possible to stop permanent erosion.

Shafiqur Rahman Shakeel, chairman of Dhubaria Union Parishad under Nagorpur upazila, said the dumping of geo bags cannot stop erosion in the area.

On the phone said Executive Officer Wahiduzzaman in Nagarpur Upazila, I have visited the erosion area and informed the relevant higher authorities, the steps to be taken by them.

Locals demanded the construction of embankments as a permanent solution.

Md Sirajul Islam, executive engineer of WDB in Tangail, said we were dumping such bags on an emergency basis. Already sent a proposal to the government through to take measures to prevent river erosion permanently.”
